In the spring of 2022 I participated in the data science class Communicating with Data. The purpose of this project was to effectively communicate environmental data. I chose to focus my work on urban heat islands in New York City and how to combat rising temperatures. To this end, I created a poster showcasing illustrated maps of the city, including a heat map and locations of public parks. The visual correlation is clear—areas with more green space have lower surface temperatures. Growing up in NYC, we were often taught the phrase “Stop, Drop, and Roll” in relation to fire safety. “Stop, Drop, and Plant” is my take on the slogan, to prevent the world from burning.
